Architecture

Please read about the Directory Sizer architecture.

Planning

If you have a machine running SQL Server 7/2000 and Internet Information Server, then this is an ideal place to install all the Directory Sizer core components. Simply whip through setup, one button after another.

If you have SQL Server 7/2000 and Internet Information Server running on separate machines then you should install the database and the Central service on the SQL Server 7 machine and then install the web on your IIS machine. You need to do it in this order for SQL login/passwords to be set correctly.

If you don't have SQL Server 7/2000 , you can install MSDE, a light version of SQL Server from http://www.franzo.co.nz/dirsizer2/downloads/dsmsde.exe before you start installing the rest of Directory Sizer.

If you don't have IIS, you will first need to install it from the NT Option Pack (NT 4 only) available from Microsoft, or if you are running Windows 2000, install IIS through Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components.

Special note on Directory Sizer Central service

The Directory Sizer Central service and the Directory Sizer Database are ideally installed on the same machine, and this is the only configuration supported by the setup program. This reduces network traffic and simplifies security. If you have to keep these separate, see Registry settings to find out how to tell Directory Sizer Central where to find the database.

Setup

The setup program must be run from a writeable network folder, and this folder should be used for future setups. During phases of the setup, the program writes configuration files to the setup folder to simplify future phases, e.g. which server to find the database on.

Setup

Post-installation

After installing Directory Sizer, you need to consider an appropriate schedule for sizing and purging.

Browse to your site, e.g. http://localhost/dszWeb.  You won't see much other than a few empty list boxes as no information has been recorded yet!

Click on the Admin button.

Edit the schedule, and set the "SizeAllServers" job to run in a few minutes time.

For this version, you must now restart the Directory Sizer Central service for it to pick up the new schedule.

Note that sizing your server can affect the performance of the server as Directory Sizer whizzes through looking at the size of every file, and the loading all that data into the database, so you may wish to schedule it to run at lunch time or late in the day depending on your server load etc. Directory Sizer tends to use around 25% CPU and does lots of IO retrieving directory name and size information.

The graphs only look good if there are at least two periods of information, so schedule it to run again!

Play and decide on a good schedule

Have a play, get to know the product, and install more remote servers.  The easiest way to install on remote servers is to run the Remote Directory Sizer Scanner Setup program from the desktop of the server running Directory Sizer Central.

Choose a good schedule that suits your environment.

It gets even better

Like all good things - you just have to wait. If you think the information you have gathered looks interesting now, just wait till you have a few months data!
