Getting Directory Sizer going on Windows 2003 Server

ASP isn't enabled on W2K3 by default. To enable it do the following:

Directory Sizer also needs parent paths enabled. To do this:

Note that although the dszWeb folder does not appear through IIS Manager, it is there. Try browsing to the web site, e.g., http://servername/dszWeb to test.

Fixes, new features, and workarounds for 2.1e

Drive skipped

Directory Sizer Scanner needs at least read access to the root (only) of all drives so that it can query the disk size and free space information for the drive. As Directory Sizer Scanner runs under the SYSTEM account by default, grant the SYSTEM account access to the root of the drive. Note you do not need to reset permissions on all files, just the root folder.

For version 2.0, this problem can also be caused by the !Log file incomplete! problem described below. Check the Error report through the web admin interface to see if this error is appearing for this server.

Errors on CD-Net drives

Directory Sizer Scanner cannot size CD-Net drives.  To avoid errors appearing in the log, please see the documentation on registry settings about how to ignore a particular drive.

The include file '../include/dszConnection.asp' was not found

Prune period

You can now "prune", i.e. delete all data for all servers for a particular period.

Recyclers size

There is now a button in the web interface to list the size of all Recyclers on all machines.

New utility stored procedures

For programmers using Directory Sizer data, there are new utility stored procedures: zFindOversizedCurrent and zFindDirectory

Directory Sizer failed to start on German SQL Server

A problem in the German version of SQL Server prevented Directory Sizer from scheduling a scan. This problem has been worked around in 2.1e.

Repeated server name and/or divide by 0 error

These problems, caused by two kinds of corrupt filename data, have been resolved in 2.1e

Directory Sizer Central service hangs on stop

At some sites, the Directory Sizer Central service would hang when stopped. This problem has been fixed.

Please note that this bug may actually prevent the upgrade from starting!  If this problem happens for you, please set the Directory Sizer Central service startup to Manual, then install the upgrade after the server is rebooted.

Fixes / features in version 2.1

Divide by zero error encountered

This error is displayed on the web page when browsing to the dszWeb.

  1. One cause of this error has been resolved in 2.1e (above)
  2. This problem has also been known to be caused by a corrupt Directory Sizer database.  To restore the database...

Web style page

Web interface style can be customised: the width of graphs, ball sizes in graphs, and whether hyperlinks are underlined.

File sizes, compression and disk usage

When viewing folders, the σ(FileSize)  column reports the total file size as reported by Windows explorer, and the Used column reports the actual disk space used by the file (a multiple of the disk cluster size).

Export CSV (e.g. to Excel)

You can now easily export data to Excel by click on the CSV button that appears on each page.

Delete the data for a specified server

You can now delete all data in the database for a specified server.

Workarounds for version 2.0

Graphs not displayed

In regions where numbers are displayed with a comma rather than a period for the decimal place, some graphs do not display. This is fixed in Directory Sizer 2.1. See the Downloads page.

Your registration key doesn't work

Please enter your registration key in upper case. This problem does not affect Directory Sizer 2.1.

!Log file incomplete! error

When Directory Sizer Scanner encounters control characters part way through a directory name it will log them faithfully and report them to Directory Sizer Central. A chkdsk/f would probably fix the problem.

Alternatively, please upgrade to Directory Sizer 2.1. See the Downloads page.

DirSizeU Type Mismatch error

This problem was resolved in the latest version of dirsizeu.exe.
